Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make money?

CPM, or Cost-Per-Thousand Impressions. When a user from inside the U.S. attempts to access your site’s content, it triggers an overlay CPM ad from one of Kanopy’s ad partners. Every time an ad is completed, you earn revenue.

How much do I get paid?

It depends on a number of factors, most importantly, how much an advertiser is willing to pay for exposure on your site based on CPM (Cost-Per-Thousand Impressions). We split ad revenue with publishers 50/50.

How often do I get paid? What is the method of payment?

Payments are made on a net 30 basis. On the last day of each month our system identifies all accounts that have earned $100 or more in valid user clicks. You can either be mailed a check or have an electronic funds transfer (PayPal). You can control these settings from the Publisher Dashboard.

How do I get started?

Getting started with Kanopy is easy. First, complete an approval application. Second, choose what types of ad units your site will accept. And third, use the simple publisher dashboard to create ad zones.

Do I have to sign a contract?

No, there are no contracts to sign. Publishers must complete an approval application and agree to our Publisher Agreement and Privacy Policy. Kanopy requires approval of new accounts in order to maintain quality and competitive revenue for publishers.

How do I place an ad on my site?

Once your application is approved, just log into your account, customize your ad unit, and copy and paste a block of HTML code into your website. You may only place ads on sites that have been approved.

How do I manage multiple accounts?

If you are going to place Kanopy ad units on multiple websites, every site must complete an approval application. Multiple sites can be controlled under a single account.

What if I already have an ad network?

That’s 100% fine by us. Kanopy is not competing with traditional ad networks for the display ad space on your site. In contrast, Kanopy monetizes a “new area” of your site and serves an overlay ad when a user attempts to access your site’s content.

Do I have to change the look of my site?

Absolutely not! All you need to do is place the code we provide in front of your premium content. You might consider changing how your premium content is accessed if there is not a barrier (i.e. a button, link, etc.) presently in front of it, where you can place a Kanopy ad unit.

Do I get to approve ads shown on my site?

Yes, publishers will be sent an email notifying that there are pending campaigns in the Ad Approval section of the Publisher Dashboard. Publishers have 24 hours to approve ads and if there is no response Kanopy will make the decision on your behalf.

Why has my account been suspended?

If your account has been suspended, it has violated one of our Publisher Agreements, including click fraud. Additionally, invalid domains and non-English language sites are not allowed, as well as ad-only, pornographic and/or violent sites. Upon suspension or warning, an email will be sent to the publisher with a specific reason as to why.

What can I do about click fraud on my site?

To guard against outside people committing click fraud on your site, several of our publishers have installed scripts that sense when someone at a particular IP address is clicking too fast and too often. The script then blocks that IP address and prevents them from clicking. Thus, their ads do not show a high number of invalid clicks, and their accounts are not suspended. Publishers who don’t have this protection may want to consider installing such a script on their sites.

Does it matter what type of site I have to use Kanopy?

As long as the site meets our Publisher Agreement and Privacy Policy, you can use ads on any kind of site or content you are looking to monetize. We have created different ad units because we recognize that every publisher site is different. Try out a few different ad units and see what works best for your users.

What is ad code?

When you join Kanopy we ask you to add a unique ad code into the HTML of the page(s) of your choice. This ad code is our lifeline to you and it serves important functions: Your ad code triggers a statistics program on our server. You must keep your ad code posted if you want to be eligible for campaigns. your site will not be included in proposals without the statistical information that the source code generates on Kanopy’s servers. Also, your ad code tells the Kanopy server exactly which ad to send to your page(s) based on the campaigns and ad units you have approved.
